jQuery Selector Performance
5/12/2009 6:47 PM
I just got done spending a few hours debugging some slow jQuery and thought that I should share the summary of my findings with the world at large. Always try to use an id or class designation when selecting DOM elements. For example, on a page with about a megabyte of HTML I had this selector:
var firstRow = ("#aspxGrid table tr td table tr:first");
That one line took nearly eight seconds to execute. I poked around in the HTML a bit and was eventually able to change it to (approximately):
var firstRow = ("tr#_DXHeadersRow");
That line now executed in just one millisecond. Say it with me, "just one millisecond". I hope you've learned something today.

A Nice Day For Ducks
3/16/2009 10:29 PM
It was actually above zero degrees me this afternoon so I took the opportunity and re-arranged my front porch and began wiring up some speakers (which meant running cables through and around various walls and obstructions). I am glad for the nice weather. If it holds out, maybe next weekend I'll take the top off the Jeep and go for a drive!

Nerding
3/2/2009 12:01 AM
I've been doing lots of recreational programming of late. What else is there to do in the winter? The upshot is that I'm really honing my latest-technology skills (.NET 3.5, Linq, jQuery, &c.). The downshot is that I've been staying up super late staring at my monitors and not going out with pretty girls as often as I would like to (sorry Susi, sorry Celina).

Art Shanties

Since it was so nice, Celina wanted to go see the Art Shanties this afternoon. So we did! And I took some pictures.

Mystery Shack
10/27/2008 1:16 PM
I had a Halloween party this past Saturday and it went about as perfectly as it could have. The weather was very nice, all of mine (and Logan's) sets and props worked marvelously. I didn't destroy myself on Saturday trying to get everything ready in time. I'm going to use this model for future parties since it worked so well (however, next time I'll buy more beer so that we don't run out).

Burning Man 2008

I returned home from Burning Man as safely and completely as can be expected. Pictures of the event can be found here and here. Andrea's pictures are over here.

New Shoes
5/30/2008 12:48 PM
I haven't worn "shoes" in years and years - I've always just alternated between boots and sandals. But I've finally decided that I needed something in-between. After getting frustrated with REI's selection I went to Fast & Furless and decided on something called "Lazer-K" by Earth. (For some reason, their website refers to it as the "Logan-K" style - I wonder why the change? I'd've been more likely to buy something called "Logan-K" than "Lazer-K" if given the choice.)
Anywho. I wore them all day and have not yet experienced any discomfort (except! there is an edge on the inside of the left shoe just above the heel that is irritating when I'm driving - walking or sitting it exhibits no trouble).
Just thought you should know.
