Server Failure A server failure has occurred. Read more for minute-by-minute updates.
08Jan2 17:00 A server failure has occurred (this effects Ed's
Room, and other sites running on my machine). When I try to remote it
I'm greeted with "The file or directory
c:\WINNT\Registration\R0000000000e9.clb is corrupt or unreadable.
Please run the Chkdsk utility."
08Jan2 18:16 I've been working on but the OS won't boot.
It gets half-way through "Starting Windows 2000" and then blows with a
BSoD. I've tried recovering the OS with the installation disk but it
can't even find the OS on the drive. :( I'm going to try some more
recovery techniques (doubtful) and then I'll pull the drive and try it
in another computer. (FYI: all the system data (email, databases) are
on the D drive which, as far as I know, is fine.)
08Jan2 18:31 I
got in via the Recovery Console only to find that there are no files on
the C drive. I'm currently waiting on a chkdsk to see if the drive is
physically bad. I hope it is because the alternative scenario is
disturbing. (BTW, the D drive looked okay, though the Recovery Console didn't have access to any of the folders.)
08Jan2 18:48 "Good
news, everybody!" Chkdsk found some errors, apparently fixed them and
the machine now boots. Everything else should fall into place, soon. BTW,
the first event log message of Jan 2 at 1p was "The device,
\Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period."
followed by "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and
unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:." four hours
later. I have no idea what caused the "corruption" but it seems that it
wasn't very severe after all.
08Jan2 19:34 The OS seems stable; but IIS is non-responsive. Trying the 2k "Repair" tool didn't do anything so I'm reinstalling IIS (hopefully I won't have to recreate all the virtual web sites).
08Jan2 23:22 No such luck. I couldn't get IIS working properly (there must have been some severe file corrupage that a repair couldn't fix). Now I'm reinstalling the OS. I'm not reformatting the drive in the hopes that most of the software will just continue to work.
08Jan3 00:24 I'm much too tired to keep fucking with this shit tonight. I've reinstalled the OS and it looks like I've got to also reinstall all the apps. This all takes time and I don't want to fuck with it anymore. I'll probably get it done tomorrow morning.
08Jan3 10:21 The struggle to make Windows do something useful continues. The onslaught of never-ending reboots is at hand. The first two priorities are edsroom and my web mail client. Having done that, everything else should be relatively straight-forward.
08Jan3 12:03 Straight-forward, perhaps, but nevertheless very time consuming. I foolishly left a fresh installation of Windows exposed to the internet for nearly twelve hours. Predictably it now has at least one bit of malware on it. By the time I've downloaded and installed the remained of the critical patches (and the anti-viral software) who knows how many might show up? I don't want to have to reinstall the OS again but this is the kind of activity I expect when using M$ shit. "If I had paid for this, I'd be pissed."
08Jan3 14:42 OhGod this is taking forever. I'm trying to find a free (or trial) anti-viral program that will both run on 2000 Server and can identify and eliminate whatever bit of malware that's trying to send out thousands and thousands of pieces of spam. Of course, I have the computer disconnected from the internet to prevent its payload - but this means that I can't use any anti-viral software's "update" features. And the concept of offline update downloading seems to be completely foreign to all anti-virus companies. I thought I would be done by noon. It looks unlikely that I'll be able to anything else today aside from sit in front of this shitty computer.
08Jan3 14:56 ClamWin found Worm.Allaple-2. Dammit, worm, it's your fault! Maybe I can finally move forward, now.
08Jan4 09:11 I'm stunned. After running for approximately twenty hours, ClamWin reported finding some six-hundred infected files. And then: nothing. All it did was report. There was no cleaning, disinfecting, deleting or quarantining. I wasted an entire day with this software only to discover that its default setting was "Report Only". If I had known I would have just reinstalled the OS again and been done by with it all by now. This is the most infuriating downtime I've ever experienced. Another day of this and I might not bother rebuilding this machine at all.
08Jan4 13:51 Comodo anti-virus worked beautifully. ClamWin can suck it. As of this moment I believe the server to be at 90% correctfulness. At this point I'm going to stop futzing with the machine. If something appears borken drop me an email and I'll see what I can do.

jarrin Webadel is working - as soon as I can clear of this virus problem I can get it back online. There may still be numerous interruptions (because that's just how Windows administration is) but it'll settle down in a few hours, I think. Thursday, January 03, 2008 3:20 PM from
